Souleymane Bachir Diagne
(Aggrégatiion in Philosophy, Ecole Normale Supérieure,
rue d'Ulm, doctorat d'état, Sorbonne), taught philosophy
at Cheikh Anta Diop University of Dakar before joining Northwestern
in 2002. Between 1993 and 1999 he was a special advisor to the President
of Senegal for cultural and educational policy. His area of specialty
is symbolic logic where he is the author of a book on Boole's algebra
of logic and of a translation, with presentation of Booles Laws
of Thought. He is also the author of several books on Africa
and Islam: The Cultural Question in Africa (with Henri Ossebi,
1996); Islam et société ouverte: La fidelité
et le mouvement dans la philosophie d'Iqgal (2001); and Reconstruire
le sens: Textes et enjeux de prospectives africaines (2001)
and the editor of four others. He is a member of the editorial board
of Revue d'Histoire des Mathématiques and
of Présence Africaine as well as a member
of the Pan-African Council for the development of Research in Social
Sciences, CODESRIA.
