Department of Civil Engineering
Jean-François Gaillard (D.Sc.,
University Denis Diderot-Paris VII, Sciences Physiques-Géochimie),
Associate Professor of Civil Engineering. His current research
focuses on the study of the chemical forms (speciation) and the
biogeochemical cycles of elements in aquatic systems. The primary
objective of his research group is to determine the analytical
speciation of metals to better understand their fate in the environment
and define appropriate remediation actions. To that end, he and
his group are using a multi-method approach combining electrochemical,
microscopic, and molecular tools. In the ten years prior to his
coming to the US, Gaillard was involved in various collaborative
research projects in France, as part of Joint Global Ocean Flux
Study (France-JGOFS). Between 1991 and 1993 he was the Chief Scientist
for ANTARES-I funded by the CNRS and the Institut français
dela rechercher et technologie polaire (IFRTP) and is the editor
of a volume related to this project (Deep Sea Research II: ANTARES
1: France JGOFS in the Indian Sector of the Southern Ocean: Benthic
and Water Column Processes, 1997). Gaillard is Associate Editor
of the Journal of Hydrology.
