Ian Hurd
Department
of Political Science
Ian Hurd (Ph.D. Yale University), Assistant Professor
of Political Science works on the theory and practice of international
organizations, in particular the UN Security Council. He is completing
a book which explores a the process of the Council’s legitimation
and delegitimation since 1945. In his work he draws on elements
from social theory, international law, and diplomatic history in
order to see how legitimacy is created, used, and lost by an international
organization. In addition, he has published articles on the place
of symbolic politics in international relations, on the problem
of designing international labor standards, and on the reform of
the UN Security Council. Hurd was the recipient, in 2002, of a
grant from the Carnegie Council on Ethics and International affairs.
