Michael R. Stein

Michael R. Stein, (PhD, Columbia) is Professor
of Mathematics. He served as Associate Dean for Undergraduate Studies
at Northwestern from 1993 to 1998 and as Director of the Integrated
Science Program from 1988 to 1993. His research interests include
algebraic K-theory, Chevalley groups, and, most recently, braid
groups (currently the
subject of collaborative research with a French colleague). He spent a year
as a graduate student at the Institut des Hautes Etudes Scientifiques in Bures-sur-Yvette,
the beginning of a long association with French mathematics and culture. Most
recently (1998-99) he held a visiting position at Université Louis Pasteur
in Strasbourg.
