Samuel I. Stupp
Department of Chemistry
Samuel I. Stupp (PhD,
Northwestern), Board of Trustees Professor of Materials Science,
Chemistry and Medicine. His current research focuses on materials
chemistry, a rapidly developing interdisciplinary field that
aims to achieve the molecular design of materials with specific
properties and complex functions. Topics studied recently in
his laboratory include molecular self assembly, supramolecular
materials, biomaterials for the repair of human tissues, nonlinear
optical properties of organic solids, and templated syntheses
of nanostructured semiconductors. His associations and awards
include: Materials Research Society Medal Award (2000), Member
of Advisory Board of Nano Letters, American Chemical Society,
Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science,
member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, Joliot Curie
Professor at Ecole Superieure de Physique et de Chimie, Paris,
Humboldt Award for Senior U.S. Scientists, Fellow, American Physical
Society, Department of Energy Prize for Outstanding Scientific
Accomplishment in Materials Chemistry, Xerox Faculty Award for
Excellence in Engineering Research, NIH Special Dental Research
Award. Stupp served on the NRC Steering Group for a Workshop
on Bionics for Space Exploration.
